What is We Can Cook?

We Can Cook is a hands-on food education programme that teaches a class of children to make simple, tasty and nutritious dishes over three progressive sessions.

Working with our incredible food teachers, children not only gain valuable lifelong skills and confidence in preparing food, but they also try lots of different fruit and vegetables and learn about their nutritional benefits. Teachers join in too, building up ideas for more cooking with the children, even after the project is finished.

This year, the programme is open to primary schools in the London borough of Brent with further London boroughs to be announced. We will also be continuing to work with primary schools in Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester (with over 35% free school meals eligibility). Schools don’t need a cooking room to take part and all ingredients will be provided. The programme is best suited to Key Stage 2 children.

The sessions focus on:

  • Building children’s cooking knowledge step-by-step, starting with simple recipes like seasonal salads and progressing to more complex dishes such as pizza or pasta
  • Introducing children to new recipes and ingredients
  • Helping teachers improve their skills and confidence to lead cooking lessons
