Theory of change

Driving change at every level to transform school food.

We believe...

We believe in the power of food

Equal access to nutritious food underpins equal access to health and learning. Food does more than fuel us for learning; it brings community, joy, exploration and pride. When we recognise the full power of food, it can connect us better to our bodies, cultures, and planet.

We believe in the power of schools

Children sit down for lunch 2,660 times between joining reception and leaving school. That’s 2,660 opportunities to eat, explore, and engage with great food. School isn’t just where children eat, it’s where habits are formed, life skills are developed, and new experiences are shared. It is the perfect place to nurture a positive relationship with food that lasts a lifetime.

Our mission

Our work is guided by a clear mission: to create a happier, healthier future for every child. To make that happen, we work with policymakers, local authorities, multi-academy trusts (MATs), individual schools and the children and young people we serve.

Our journey so far

School Food Matters began life as a grassroots campaign in one London borough. Since 2007 it has blossomed into a national charity and is now a leader in the movement for the transformation of school food.

Our next steps

Over the next five years we will continue our mission to ensure that every child can enjoy nutritious and delicious food at school and food education that sets them up for a life of health and happiness. Our strategy breaks down our five key priorities.
