School Food Matters calls for an urgent extension to the Household Support Fund

20 February 2024
We have joined 120 organisations in support of Barnardo’s open letter to the Chancellor calling for the extension of the household support fund so that families facing hardship, hunger, and unexpected costs are able to get the help they need in their communities.

The Household Support Fund (HSF), administered by the Department for Work and Pensions since October 2021, provides financial assistance to councils for essential needs, including food. Funding often provides the means for local authorities to deliver vouchers to parents whose children are eligible for free school meals, expanding access to nutritious food during the school holidays. Over one third of the value of the fund in 2021/22 and 2022/23 went to vouchers for low-income families.

There is currently no confirmation of an extension beyond March 2024 for the HSF. We believe that no family should have to choose between heating their home or feeding their children in the UK in 2024. This lack of funding may have a devastating impact on families currently in receipt of support.

In just 30 seconds, you can take action by writing to your MP urging them to extend the Household Support Fund before it ends in March: just click this link:
