A new School Meals Toolkit for Parliamentarians

1 May 2024
This week the International Parliamentary Network for Education launched a toolkit to provide members of parliament with evidence, advice and guidance to support school meals around the world.

The Toolkit, developed by the International Parliamentary Network for Education, sets out the evidence on the multiple benefits of school meals, which include nutrition and educational outcomes. It also sets out recommendations for parliamentarians to champion the importance of school meals both in the UK and around the world.

The Toolkit supports the ongoing work of the School Meals Coalition, which is comprised of 97 countries from around the world, all working to “urgently improve and scale up the school meal programmes to ensure every child has the opportunity to receive a healthy, nutritious school meal by 2030.”

While countries such as the US, France, Germany, and Canada are part of the Coalition, the UK is still absent. As a proud member of the Coalition since 2021, we continue to call for universal access to free school meals and urge the UK government to join the collective global movement to make school meals a priority and advocate for greater access to this most effective ‘social safety net’.
