A small victory?

14 May 2019

Ofsted has published its new inspection framework and handbooks for schools and we spy the words "eat healthily"!

The consultation attracted over 15,000 respondents - the biggest ever response to an Ofsted consultation. Amongst the respondents were passionate school food and children's health enthusiasts who had noticed that the words 'healthy eating', 'school food' and 'food education' were missing from the draft. Together we got busy, spoke out, drafted responses and gathered support. SFM alone generated over 200 responses from parents, teachers and governors. The happy outcome is that we now have the following references to healthy eating in the handbook that were not there before:

  • p58/59: 214. This judgement focuses on the dimensions of the personal development of pupils that our education system has agreed, either by consensus or statute, are the most significant. These are ... developing pupils’ understanding of how to keep physically healthy, eat healthily and maintain an active lifestyle.
  • p62: 224. The school provides high-quality pastoral support. Pupils know how to eat healthily, maintain an active lifestyle and keep physically and mentally healthy. They have an age-appropriate understanding of healthy relationships.

Clearly we would have preferred to see these references in the inspection framework and more robust language around healthy eating, school food and food education but at least this is a nod to the important role schools play in teaching children how to eat well to keep them happy, healthy and ready to learn.

Next step - to work with Ofsted as they review the curriculum to ensure that food education is front and centre!  In the meantime you can read the news from Ofsted here.
