Our friends at Soil Association sent out an army of ‘secret diner’ families to try kid's menus in popular supermarket café’s and restaurant chains

The Out to Lunch campaign sets out to reveal the best and worst children's menus based on many factors, such as availability of healthy and fresh food options, provision of nutritional information, sustainability of ingredients, use of British meat products, and sugar content in puddings. JD Wetherspoon and IKEA topped the league table, with Tesco Café, Pizza Express and Gourmet Burger Kitchen coming bottom. Have a look at the full list here.

The 'secret diners' have persuaded 13 of the chain restaurants and supermarket cafes to commit to serving two portions of veg with every child’s meal in the next 12 months. This equates to 11 million more portions of veg being served because of the Out to Lunch campaign!

The next mission is to encourage the remaining 15 eateries to commit to improving the service and food they offer children. Soil Association have recommended that they take these four simple steps:

 1. Serve two portions of veg with every child's meal

2. Make water freely available and stop serving sugary drinks to children

3. Serve children's portions of adult dishes (ensuring they are healthy and nutritionally balanced)

4. Use quality ingredients such as free range and organic
