Westminster City Council goes above and beyond existing school food provision in London

11 July 2024
Westminster City Council committed an additional £1.56 million to extend free school meals beyond primary school children, as well as additional funding to cover meals during the school holidays.

With more than 30,000 households vulnerable to the cost-of-living crisis in Westminster, the City Council will continue extending school food provision to all children aged 3-14. This policy is set to save families £550 per child each year.

The Greater London Authority (GLA) made its pledge to fund free school meals for all primary school children in London permanent, which has allowed the council to continue to use the additional funding and offer free school meals to more children who fall outside of the primary school age bracket for as long as the GLA policy is in place.

The Council has also implemented a new auto-enrolment initiative to ensure paperwork doesn’t stand in the way of eligible children receiving FSM. The efforts to implement auto-enrolment has allowed 243 additional children to access FSM in the last year alone.

This is an incredible effort from Westminster Council and shows great commitment to children’s health and wellbeing. You can read the full announcement here.
